Trekking in Bologna: a delicious adventure

Bologna's porticos symbolise the city's sense of community and welcoming ambiance. The portico that climbs from the historic centre to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca stretches 3.7 kilometres, made up of 666 arches and 15 chapels: an ideal choice for pilgrimages and Sunday walks. Enjoy a stroll under the arches built to protect the faithful to reach the hill known as the Colle della Guardia. The path itself is a metaphor for a snake, the Devil, crushed by the Madonna: the triumph of good over evil. The route leads from the Porta Saragozza to the monumental Arco del Meloncello, then uphill for another two kilometres. As you climb the hills, you can admire the chapels distributed along the route. Finally, the portico ends at the Sanctuary, topped by a large dome: a distinctive silhouette against the sky. Go up a few more steps to the small terrace to gaze out over Bologna and its towers. Treat yourself to some well-deserved refreshment by sampling a spot of local cuisine: piadine or tigelle bread from Modena, fried tortellini from Bologna, mortadella and other cured meats from Emilia, or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and a nice glass of Lambrusco or craft beer.
