The Churches of Florence: where art meets history
Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria del Fiore and Santa Croce: a walking tour to discover Florence's religious masterpieces
The capital of art and the cradle of the Renaissance: as you walk around Florence, remarkable masterpieces and beautiful sights lie around every corner. To truly immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere and spirituality of Florence. Alongside your private guide, take in the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and its Renaissance façade designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Go inside and admire the masterpieces within, such as Giotto's Crucifix, Masaccio's Trinity, and Filippino Lippi and Ghirlandaio's frescoes. Immerse yourself in the peaceful Chiostro Verde (Green Cloister), so named for the dominant shade in the frescoes by Paolo Uccello. From Santa Maria Novella, make your way to the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the oldest in Florence, which was consecrated in 393 by Saint Ambrose and extended in 1400 by Brunelleschi at the behest of the Medici family. Visit the interior and the Old Sacristy, built by Brunelleschi, where the tombs of the founding Medici lie. As you stroll along the naves, discover works by some of history's greatest artists: Donatello, Bronzino, Filippo Lippi, Rosso Fiorentino and Pontormo. After a visit to the adjacent Canons' Cloister, proceed to Piazza del Duomo, home to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery, and Giotto's Campanile. Head to the Piazza della Signoria, Florence's main square, to discover an unparalleled concentration of architectural and sculptural masterpieces. The last stop is the Basilica of Santa Croce and its beautiful façade, covered in polychrome marble. Admire the frescoes by Giotto and Agnolo Gaddi, Donatello's Crucifix and Annunciation, and the funerary monuments to illustrious historical figures, such as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Finally, visit the Brunelleschi cloister, the first cloister and the Pazzi Chapel, Brunelleschi's masterpiece.
