The Churches of Florence between art and history
Santa Maria Novella, San Lorenzo, Santa Maria del Fiore and Santa Croce: walking tour to discover Florentine masterpieces
The capital of art and the cradle of the Renaissance: walking around Florence means encountering masterpieces and beauty at every corner. To experience as protagonists the atmosphere and spirituality that only Florence can offer. Together with a private guide, admire the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, with the Renaissance façade designed by Leon Battista Alberti. Walk among the masterpieces that it houses, such as Giotto's Crucifix, Masaccio's Trinity, the frescoes by Filippino Lippi and Ghirlandaio. Let yourself be enchanted by the peace of the Chiostro Verde, so called for the green earth mural paintings by Paolo Uccello. After leaving Santa Maria Novella, reach the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the oldest in Florence, consecrated in 393 by Sant'Ambrogio and expanded in 1400 by Brunelleschi at the behest of the Medici family. Visit the interior and the Old Sacristy, built by Brunelleschi, with the tombs of the founders of the Medici family. Among the naves, observe the works of the greats of the time: Donatello, Bronzino, Filippo Lippi, Rosso Fiorentino and Pontormo. After a visit to the adjacent Chiostro dei Canonici, continue to Piazza del Duomo, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and Giotto's Bell Tower. Proceed to Piazza della Signoria, the main square in Florence, a concentration of architectural and sculptural masterpieces that has no equal in the world. Conclude with the Basilica of Santa Croce, with its façade covered in polychrome marble. Be won over by the frescoes by Giotto and Agnolo Gaddi, by the Crucifix and the Annunciation by Donatello, by the funerary monuments and tombs of illustrious figures of the past, such as Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. Finally, enter the Chiostro Brunelleschi, the Chiostro Antico and the Cappella Pazzi, a masterpiece by Brunelleschi.
