Matera and Alberobello: a land of history and architecture

A city carved out of the rock of the Sassi, Matera is unique within Europe. In its ancient core, the past is still alive and well, but the people have also learnt to adapt. Wander through its two great natural amphitheatres, the Sasso Caveoso and the Sasso Barisano, which have been used as locations for films such as The Passion of the Christ and James Bond. Visit a fully furnished cave house to understand how people lived until a few years ago in the dwellings of the Sassi: adults, children and often donkeys or sheep all sharing the same underground space. Next is a tasting of Matera bread: one of the city's typical products, it is fragrant and tasty, and can be round or horn-shaped. Then join a private driver to set off for Alberobello, in the heart of the Murgia dei Trulli, to visit the ancient Rione Monti, a colourful bazaar, and the quieter and more traditional Aia Piccola neighbourhood. Finally, stop at the Church of Saint Anthony, the only one in the world designed in the shape of a "trullo" hut. A day of constant discoveries.
