The Sassi of Matera between history and beauty
One of the oldest cities in the world, Matera is a magical place dug into the rock. The Sassi districts, built around natural caves, offer a moving insight into history.
In the stones of the city, you can trace the history of a civilisation that carved houses, temples and Byzantine rock churches decorated with frescoes and sculptural elements. Wander through the caves and underground passages of the Sasso Caveoso district, where the ancient cave houses seem frozen in time, then lose yourself among the shops of the Sasso Barisano district, pausing from time to time to admire your surroundings. Visit a furnished cave house to understand the customs and traditions of the inhabitants of these old neighbourhoods before they were abandoned in the 1950s.
Next is a tasting of Matera bread: one of the city's typical products, it is fragrant and tasty, and can be round or horn-shaped. Finally, at the end of the tour, you can indulge in some other Lucanian dishes with lunch in a traditional restaurant with stone ceilings. A journey into a timeless place, where humans are able to coexist in harmony with their environment.
